The current laws in Venice for residents to dump their trash are that trash can be put outside of one’s residence from 6am to 8am. This can happen 6 days a week, with no trash collection occurring on Sunday.

Trash Out At Wrong Time

However many residents do not abide by these laws and often leave trash either in a place that is not suitable for trash to be, such as or put it out during times that are not specified as proper dumping times. These sites could be near public trash cans or public walkways not neat the person’s residence.Often people will put out trash the night before so that they will not have to get up early the next morning to put it out.

Another issue is that some residents accumulate a large amount of trash before putting it out, which will result in a large pile of trash that both smells bad and can obstruct small alleyways. The ideal method is to put the trash out everyday so that large piles of unsightly garbage don't appear.

Trash In A Public Place

Some residents can learn when to put out the trash though. Since the trash is picked up by workers on foot they take a while to get across the city. Residents can learn the usual time that their particular part of the city gets its trash picked up and put it out right before it happens. This can however backfire if the trash is collected earlier than usual and the trash ends up staying outside all day until the collection the next day.

Even when properly collected the current model for trash collection is a huge strain on the city of Venice. On average it costs about $335 per ton of trash collected in the city of Venice, as compared with $84 for nearby mainland cities. One reason for this is that all trash must be collected on foot instead of by trucks, since Venice has only canals.
